Stability Evaluations of Concrete Dams: Download

  • Registration Closed

Historically, concrete dam analysis focused much of the attention on material property assumptions, which has been and continues to be important.  But more recently, the focus is primarily on the modes of failure experienced by these types of dams.  This webinar will present a more in-depth review of stability evaluation methods for concrete dams; the basics of which was first presented in the previous webinar entitled “Introduction to Concrete Gravity Dams”.  This presentation will expand on linking the method of analysis to the potential failure modes.

This webinar will begin with a brief overview of the origins of rational design methods previously presented in “Introduction to Concrete Gravity Dams”.  Other topics consist of:

I.  Concrete Dam Construction and Potential Failure Modes
II.  Material Properties
III.  Loading Cases
IV.  Current Federal Agency Criteria
V.  Stability Analysis Methods
VI.  Simple Gravity Method
VII.  Finite Element Methods

The purpose of this webinar is to familiarize practitioners with the current state-of-the-practice in evaluating the stability of concrete dams.

Guy S. Lund, P.E.

Principal Engineer, Gannett Fleming, Inc.

Guy S. Lund has over 35 years of experience in dam safety, design, including hydraulic and structural design of spillways, outlet works, and appurtenant structures, comprehensive structural analyses of concrete dams (static and dynamic analyses utilizing both linear and non-linear methodologies), field investigations, and construction.  Mr. Lund began his career with the Bureau of Reclamation, in the concrete dams, spillways and outlet works section where he worked as a design engineer on numerous spillways, water conveyance systems, and outlet works.  For the past 30 years Mr. Lund has gained experience in the design, analysis, and evaluation of all types of mass concrete dams.  He has focused on the understanding and evaluation of structural concrete dams, using both linear and non-linear finite element methods of analyses.

Robert A. Kline, Jr., P.E.

Vice President, Gannett Fleming, Inc.

Gannett Fleming, Inc.

Mr. Kline has over 37 years of experience in the planning, design, and construction of more than 100 existing dam rehabilitation and new dam design projects. His technical specialties include a wide variety of dam engineering topics with special expertise in concrete gravity dams. Mr. Kline served as an instructor for the Association of Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) three-part webinar series on concrete dams and has published serval technical papers on concrete dams and other aspects of dam engineering.
